Ironically, or perhaps poetically, the world's greatest firefighter loved water. He swam in it as an athletic youngster and for exercise as an adult. Knocked out his wife, Kemmie, in it horsing around on their first date. Lived near it. Cruised on it. Fished in it. Raced on it. And, occasionally, accidentally, fell into it. Most importantly, Red used it to protect and cool himself so he could get closer to a wellhead or to put out a raging fire so he could cap a well. Red made a living with fire, but he made a life with water.
